My First Yoga Retreat on Haida Gwaii

And why I'm returning in 2026

There are places you travel to — and then there are places that stay with you long after you've left. For me, that place is Haida Gwaii.

In 2019, I hosted my first yoga retreat there — not fully knowing what I was stepping into, only that something in me felt called to bring people together in a way that was slower, more intentional, and deeply connected to land. What unfolded over those five days changed everything.

A Different Kind of Retreat

This wasn't a retreat in the traditional sense. There were no rigid schedules or perfectly curated experiences. Instead, there was space — space to breathe, to feel, to reconnect.

We practiced yoga daily, but what stayed with me most wasn't the movement. It was everything around it:

  • Walking through ancient coastal forests
  • Standing on vast, quiet beaches
  • Sharing meals and stories together
  • Witnessing people soften, open, and return to themselves

Haida Gwaii has a way of doing that.

The Land Changes You

There is something about Haida Gwaii that is hard to explain until you've experienced it. The air feels different. The ocean feels alive. The land holds a depth that invites you to slow down and listen. It's not just beautiful — it's powerful.

And as guests on this land, there is a responsibility to move with respect, awareness, and gratitude. That was something I felt deeply during that first retreat — and something that continues to guide how I return.

A Glimpse Into That Time

I recently revisited a moment from that first retreat — and even now, it brings me back. Not just to what we did, but to how it felt.

There was laughter. There were quiet moments. There was connection that didn't need to be forced. It reminded me that what we created wasn't just a retreat — it was a shared experience that lived in people long after they left.

More Than Yoga

Yoga was always part of the container — but it wasn't the centre of it. The retreat became about presence instead of performance, connection instead of productivity, experience instead of expectation. It was about remembering how to be, rather than constantly doing.

Why I'm Returning in 2026

Seven years later, I'm returning to Haida Gwaii. Not to recreate that first retreat — but to honour it. To gather again in a way that feels just as intentional, just as grounded, and just as connected to place.

This time, the retreat will include:

  • Daily yoga and embodied movement
  • Cultural experiences and time on the land
  • Shared meals and community connection
  • Collaboration with local hosts and artists

And most importantly — space. Space for whatever unfolds.

The 2026 Haida Gwaii Yoga & Arts Retreat runs August 3–7 at White Raven House in G̱aw Tlagée (Old Massett), Haida Gwaii. Spaces are intentionally limited to keep the experience intimate. View packages and reserve your spot.

That first retreat taught me something I carry into everything I create now: when you bring the right people together, in the right place, with the right intention — something real happens.

And Haida Gwaii has a way of making sure it does.
